Biking weekend in Limburg
During a weekend in June, we normally had a wedding party in Diepenbeek. As this is quite a distance from our home town, we booked a night over in hotel De Ploeg. However, due to Corona the wedding got postponed but as restrictions were reduced and overnight stays for pleasure were allowed, we decided to keep this reservation and go for a biking weekend in Limburg. The statement “Limburg biking paradise” is clearly an understatement. It is a pleasure to explore this nice area and the splendid weather made it even better.
Biking through water & trees
We have said it before, Limburg is known as a biking paradise and they are really investing to make the experience even better. In 2016 biking through water was introduced where you can bike through a pond. A truly unique experience. This is located in Bokrijk, near the station and the park. Since 2019 you can now also bike through the trees where a special construction is made which take you up in the trees before heading back down. These two attractions were on our todo list and we were happy to enjoy them during our biking trips. As biking through the water impressed us so much on Saturday, we visited the area again on Sunday morning, while heading to the biking through trees attraction.
On Strava you can find all details of our routes:
Hotel de ploeg is a family run cosy hotel with 15 rooms which are basic but have the luxury you need. We had a big comfortable box spring bed and a good shower. What more do you need for a biking weekend?
The breakfast was freshly prepared and had everything you need to start the day. Good strong coffee, oven baked breads and plenty of sandwich spreads. Eggs and bacon are available when you want it. On Friday and Saturday evening we ate dinner on the big terrace which was full of friendly people, a great atmosphere. The kitchen offers straightforward dishes for an affordable price and are really tasteful. The owner has a customized changing wine choice which is of high quality for the round price of 35€ per bottle. House wine comes for 21€ a bottle.
We could store or bikes secured and on Sunday we were offered a late check out so we could take a shower before heading home. Well appreciated!
In the small town of Helshoven we immediate realised we were in a popular area. We noticed the summer bar “The house without name / ‘t Huis zonder naam” and were overwhelmed. What a location! What a picture! A pond, sitting bags in different locations, a terrace and a great service. This was a very nice experience and we felt sorry this place is so far away from our home, which makes it difficult to go for a drink. We were tempted by a drink, but as we still had to bike quite a distance, we only took a Coca-Cola while enjoying the environment.
