Tignes

Tignes ski resort is located in the French Alps and is part of the Espace Killy ski area which offers more than 300 km of slopes.

You can reach Tignes ski area from La Daille via the chair lift Tommeuses. You don’t have to rush in the morning, as it only opens little later. When you reach the top via the chair lift you can either decent towards Val Claret or go via the black slope directly towards Tignes. Don’t worry, the black slope is a gentle black one in our opinion. The last part of the slope is extremely steep but it’s followed by a flat part so you can easily reduce your speed. If you want to ski above 100 km/h this is the perfect spot to do so. However, please be careful.

When you ski further towards the end of the area, you’ll reach Tignes 1550. Make sure to pause when you reach Lake du Chevril because the view is really magnificient. As it’s really at the end of the area, it’s not that crowded around Tignes 1550. As it’s way lower, it’s the perfect location to have a lunch outside in the sun. The only downside is that later on the day, when it’s really warm, the snow quality can be less. But not to an extent that is was a problem during our visit. From Tignes 1550 it will take you 3 lifts to get back.

Glacier Grande Motte

The glacier Grande Motte is at 3456 meter. To reach it you have to do some effort. The Grande Motte gondola takes you to the top but you have to either be lucky or have some time. People might be queueing and it can take you 1 or 2 gondola’s before you can go to the top. In our opinion it’s not that much added value and not worth the hassle. But I advise you try it for yourself and make up your own mind. To reach the gondola, you can either go with 2 chair lifts from Val Claret or take the Grande Motte Funicular, also in Val Claret. Same goes here, you have to be lucky that you don’t have to wait too much. You also better take the weather into account. When the sky is not clear, it dwon’t be too much fun.

The views in this ski area are marvellous, certainly if the weather is nice. Whether you are on the glacier and look around, or when you are heading back to Tignes 2100, the mountains are so beautiful. We can really enjoy to pause for a little moment and look around, the snow, the mountains, the silence. It’s also a disappointment when you see the pictures. You just can do reality justice. It gives an impression, but the real deal is way better.

We skied a couple of days in the Tignes area during our trip to Val d’Isère when we stayed in La Daille.
