When you are into skiing, you can go to a ski area located at a 30 – 45 minute drive from Reykjavik depending on traffic conditions. The area is accessible via a road that can be icy, particularly the last 10 kilometers. However, when you have a rental car, tires are equipped with spikes, so traction shouldn’t be a concern. Parking is conveniently available in front of the main building.

On the left hand side you can rent all the materials you need. Simply register first, then proceed to the counter with your ticket where the staff will assist you further. Rental payment is required, but helmets are provided free of charge. You can also rent a skisuit, if you want.

Next you can buy your skipass, with various durations available. There use to be a card with caution but since 2025 they have single day use cards which you can keep when done. You can either choose from 2 or 3 hours or day passes. In 2025 we selected 3 hours and in our opinion that’s enough to have a fun afternoon. The timer starts from your first use of the pass. The ski area has three lifts with seats, while the rest are drag lifts. Although the slopes are short, they offer enjoyable skiing experiences with magnificent views. Navigation between slopes is convenient due to the manageable size of the area.

Note however, when the weather is good, it can be very busy. Arriving early is advisable when you are planning a shorter trip. Also be prepared for very cold temperatures and dress accordingly. Extreme cold may limit your time on the slopes.

Overall, despite the cold, my experience at the ski area was fantastic and highly recommended for skiing enthusiasts.

Some videos

It wasn’t always easy to make straight videos while filming with my phone from my hand, but still I hope you get a good impression of what to expect when skiing in Iceland.
