WebSummit, an incredible conference

Due to Corona and switching jobs it had been a while since I attended a conference. In 2024 I had the idea to attend a new conference to learn about new IT trends, meet new people but most importantly be inspired by the speakers. When I found out about WebSummit anno 2024 and watched the line up of speakers, I was really impressed. Their speakers are truly covering a broad spectrum and they have the biggest names.

Speakers overview

The list of the 2024 speaker is truly impressive. I have attended a broad spectrum of sessions and below is only a list of the people I saw on stage. It was nice to be able to alternate professional related sessions with sessions which interest me from a personal points of view. At some moments the limited session duration of 20 minutes can also work in your advantage.

  •  Pharrell Williams (creative director LVMH and many more)
  • Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President Microsoft
  • Dan Rogers, CEO LaunchDarkly
  • Jeff Shiner, CEO 1Password
  • John Graham-Cumming, CTO Cloudflare
  • Demi Vollering, professional cyclist
  • Sir Mo Farah, 4x Olympic Gold Medalist and 6x World Champion
  • Many, many, many more

Location & practicalities

Lisbon in November. For Belgian people this is like heaven as the weather in Belgium isn’t great normally and some extra sun gives so much energy! The venue was the Meo Arena which is easily reachable by the Red Metro line and stop at the Oriente station. With an insane amount of 71.000 attendees you could expect lots of difficulties to navigate around the conference, but all in all that was acceptable. It was way better organised than the Microsoft Ignite conference in Atlanta I attended back in 2016 (23.000 attendees).

There are plenty of toilets, places to refill your water bottle and an insane amount of food trucks. However, on the first day I bought an Americano coffee, which was small, and I paid 4,5 euro. Next days I bought a better and bigger coffee in the Metro station, including a Pastel de Nata, and I only paid 1,8 euro. My lunch on the first day, an average hot dog and french fries, was 14 euro. The days after I bought a delicious sandwich in the metro station for 3 euro.  At Lighthouse, we threat company money as if it was our own, so up to you what you do.

Next to the prices, the queues during lunch time were quite impressive and I lost some time with that. On the second and third day, bringing my own lunch, I was way more flexible, could eat when hungry and didn’t loose time to queue for food. I could attend an extra session.

Priorities & Night Summit

Initially I had in mind to leave a little earlier and stay a little longer. With the weekend before and after the conference this could have been a great escape. However, due to work obligations of Marie-Claire, a shifted  Jordan holiday, and preparations for the 2025 year of Tom’s work, the conference came a little inconvenient. I certainly don’t want to complaint from a luxury position but I couldn’t make the most out of the conference due to other priorities. Instead of attending Night Summit, I spend the evening on my hotel room processing my work backlog due to my holidays.

So what is Night Summit all about? If I understood correctly it was a new concept since 2024 and I liked it. I was able to attend 1 of the 2 nights shortly. The organisation identifies several locations in a themed setting. It could be a setup according to nationality (Nordics, Lithuanian, …), Interests (sports, music, …), industry (SaaS, finance, …) or even broader. You select the one that suits you most and go and mingle and meet new people. Upon arrival, you can scan a QR code and the first drink is on WebSummit. Like this they are able to break up the +70K attendees in smaller groups and make it easier to meet new people. I met people from New Zealand, Poland and Lithuania.

Hotel, Czar Lisbon (****)

This affordable hotel, located at 150 metres from Metro station Anjos on the Green line is at a great location to navigate between the conference and the city center. It takes only 25 minutes from the hotel to station Oriente. You do have to switch metro in Alameda, from green to red going to the conference. The breakfast is good, extensive and has everything to get a good foundation for a day full of learning new things. Upon arrival I was offered a free drink in their bar, which I always appreciate big time. A well deserved sparkling wine! On the first day there was a bottle of water and 2 Nespresso coffee cups. After usage they are not replaced. A pity as that would have made me give it 10 points, while now I hold it to a well deserved 9 points 🙂
